Frequently Asked Questions relating to the MOT test
What is the purpose of the MOT Test and Certificate (Receipt)?
The purpose of the MOT Test is to ensure that vehicles over a prescribed age are checked at least once a year to ensure that they comply with key roadwothiness and environmental requirements.
A test certificate (receipt) relates only to the condition of testable items at the time of the test and should NOT be regarded as:
- evidence of their condition at any other time,
- evidence of the general mechanical condition of the vehicle, or
- evidence that the vehicle fully complies with all aspects of the law on vehicle contruction and use.
The MOT Certificate (Receipt) must be produced with an application for a Vehicle Excise Licence (Tax Disc) unless the vehicle is not subject to MOT Testing by virtue of its age or type. Also, police officers are entitled to require production of the certficate in respect of vehicles liable to such testing.
Can my vehicle be driven on a public highway without a valid MOT Certificate?
Vehicles MUST normally pass an MOT test three years from the date of first registration and then annually after that. You MUST NOT drive a vehicle without an MOT certificate, when it should have one. Driving an unroadworthy vehicle may invalidate your insurance. Exceptionally, you may drive to a pre-arranged test appointment or to a garage for repairs required to pass the MOT test.
Do I need to bring my current MOT Certificate/V5 Registration Document?
NO. The DVSA MOT Computerisation system will calculate the expiry date of the new certificate automatically.
Can I watch an MOT vehicle inspection?
Yes, providing you do not cause any interference to the test.
How long do I have after failing an MOT before the retest?
10 working days for a FREE retest (regardless of who does the repairs), after that period another FULL test will be required. If you car fails the Brake or Emissions Test(s) there will be a small retest fee.
When does my car require it's first MOT?
3 years after the date of Registration.
How long does an MOT test take?
Usually 35-40 minutes. However older vehicles may take longer as a more thorough inspection for corrosion for example may be required.
Do I need to make an appointment for my vehicle to be tested?
Normally, Yes. However if you turn up without an appointment then we will fit you in as soon as possible.
Am I notified when my next test is due?
Yes! We have systems in place that will send reminders approximately 20 days before your test is due. You can choose to have the reminder sent by email, text or by phone.
Can I have my car tested before the expiry date of the current MOT certificate?
Yes. If tested within the expiry date minus one calendar month and one day the new expiry date will be the anniversary of the old expiry date. However, if tested before the expiry date minus one calendar month and one day then the MOT certificate will be valid for 12 months minus one day from the date of test.
If I have my vehicle tested early and it fails the MOT test can I still drive it?
Yes, you are still covered by the current, unexpired MOT Certifcate. You will be notified of any dangerous defect found during the MOT test.
Do I need to stay with the vehicle?
No. However we do have two viewing areas from which the test is visible. We also have approximately 6 acres for you to walk around with some fantastic views of The Weald.
I can not find my MOT Certificate, can I get a duplicate copy?
Yes. There is a small charge of £10 for the duplicate. If we didn't perform the original test then we will need the reference number from the V5C Registration Document.
